Carved from natural riverstone, the Valley Tray retains the irregularity and weight of its original material rather than disguising it. A raw, textured outer edge contrasts with the smoothly polished interior, creating a low sculptural form shaped as much by nature as by design. Subtle shifts in grey, brown and mineral tones give each tray its own character, while the broad 300mm diameter emphasises the solidity of the stone. Designed by Birgitte Rømer for MUUBS, it brings a grounded, organic element to a kitchen, dining table or considered still life.
Design Details
-
Natural riverstone — each tray has individual variations in colour, mineral pattern, texture and formation.
-
Raw and polished surfaces — the rugged exterior is deliberately contrasted with a smoother, refined interior.
-
Low, broad proportion — measuring 300mm in diameter × 40mm high, giving the stone a substantial yet restrained profile.
Why It Works
-
Material honesty — irregular edges and natural markings give the piece character without applied decoration.
-
Strong textural contrast — riverstone sits particularly well alongside timber, ceramics, glass and softer materials such as linen.
-
Sculptural presence — the shallow form can hold fruit, snacks or desserts while remaining visually interesting when left largely empty.
FAQs
Will every Valley Tray look the same?
No. Each tray is made from natural riverstone, so differences in shape, colour, texture and pattern are expected. These variations make each piece individual.
How should I care for the riverstone?
Wash by hand using warm water, mild soap and a coarse brush. The tray is not dishwasher safe. Before first use, MUUBS recommends washing it thoroughly and treating the porous stone with a thin layer of neutral, food-grade oil.
Will food or oil mark the stone?
Riverstone is naturally porous and can absorb oils, grease and dyes. Treating it periodically with neutral food-grade oil helps protect the surface, although the treatment may slightly darken the stone.
